Vaporwave as post-human expression
Vaporwave and its offspring have defined a new aesthetic in an increasingly post human culture. While the art direction and sound of most projects even loosely associated with this “genre” are sprawling and multifaceted, one thing ties them together: The lack of the artists presence in physical terms, and the unimportance of their real world image.
Music has often been associated with a style or image to go along with it. The Ramones defined punk with leather jackets and tiny pants for instance. The rise of “post-human” art as well as the current trend of online art exhibitions has successfully ushered in an environment free of stylistic associations, perhaps reaching a more truthful artistic expression, even if through ironic disassociation.
While the “artist” has , throughout time, mostly projected themselves cohesively with their body of work, it ultimately seemed as an egotistical projection of vanity and in some cases an aesthetic necessity. Now, with a movement mostly rooted in the faceless malls of Soundcloud and Bandcamp, the artist becomes the art as much as the artistic product. Projects such as LINDSHEAVEN VIRTUAL PLAZA communicate their philosophies by the meta suggestion of a narrative in their bios and album descriptions while the music is an extension of the ideals. In this way the artist and the art becomes a truly cohesive whole stripping the works reliance on the artist and vice versa. The disassociation from the human element helps to create a body of work free of ego or vanity and even serves to desexualize what is typically a medium rooted in sexual tendencies, truly conveying a sense of the post-human condition, while successfully commenting on contemporary human society. – by Michael Marchand
